Meet the GGH Team: Ran Wang, Head of Market Development, Asia Pacific

Generali Global Health was delighted to welcome their new highly experienced and well-regarded Head of Market Development for Asia Pacific in October last year. In our latest ‘Meet the GGH Team’ interview series, we get a glimpse of what makes Ran tick, both professionally and personally.

What was your professional training and experience before joining Generali Global Health?

For the past thirteen years, my career has been focused on medical insurance and reinsurance. With an actuarial background, my role started from research and consulting and gradually evolved to product development, strategy and market development. Before joining Generali Global Health, I worked in consulting and product development roles for a global reinsurer and its subsidiary in Germany and Asia.

Around six years ago, I started my journey in IPMI working for a blue chip IPMI insurer in Singapore. I oversaw proposition development and market entry strategy for the Asia region before I took on my current role with Generali Global Health.


How long have you been part of the GGH team and what is your role?

I’ve been part of the Generali Global Health family since October 2018 and I am responsible for spearheading our market development efforts in Asia. This means focussing on partnership building, coordination with internal and external stakeholders, and also sharing insights in the Asian markets to support our business development. My aim is to bring the GGH expertise to our Asia Pacific markets so that our customers can access high-quality healthcare.


What do you like about working at GGH?

Definitely the people and culture. We are a relatively lean and fast growing team. We all know each other, and it makes the work I do much more fulfilling when I know what I am doing will also benefit my colleagues. I’m based in Singapore and appreciate the collaborative and trusting culture which I’ve experienced first-hand through a number of ongoing market entry projects in Asia.


What does a ‘typical’ day at GGH look like?

In my market development role, there’s unlikely to be a typical day, which is probably why I love the job so much. Having said that, when there is a relatively quiet day, I have the luxury of focusing on GGH’s Asia Pacific strategic initiatives. I spend most of my time working on business cases and new concepts, liaising with internal and external stakeholders, and preparing presentations for meetings or conferences. I also spend much of my time maintaining close relationships with key regional brokers to explore new opportunities in what is a fast moving market environment.


Do you hold any other industry positions?

Not for now, but I am gaining increasing exposure to selected regional conferences related to healthcare polices and InsurTech trends.


Have you ever lived abroad as an expat?

I’m originally from Wuhan, China. I studied and worked in Germany for around five years when I was younger and have been living in Singapore for about a decade now. This means I can relate to the challenges many younger expats are facing nowadays, especially when they are on short or mid-term overseas assignments when their family doesn’t accompany them.


If you weren’t working in the IPMI industry, what would you be doing?

The IPMI industry is dynamic and exciting and I’m glad it’s where my focus is now. That said, had I chosen a different path six years ago, I would probably be in the management consulting sector now. 


How do you look after your own wellbeing?

I swim whenever I have time, which is definitely one of the perks of living in a tropical country. For mental wellbeing, I benefit from my girlfriend’s personal yoga and meditation training.


What are your main interests outside work?

I am an amateur photographer using mainly analogue mid-format gear. The 1960s Rolleiflex is my everyday camera, although I often use my iPhone 7 as well.


What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

To map out my life, but do it in pencil. I'm a bit of a Type A planner, but through the years I've learned how to adjust and shift gears when needed, without getting worked up about it.


What song would you choose as your theme tune?

‘Space Oddity’ by David Bowie. It always gives me a great Monday lift!
